Physical Development & Beyond: Why Young Children Need to Move
Rae Pica, Director, Moving & Learning
When we think of the words children and movement, physical development is usually the first benefit to come to mind. And physical development—in terms of movement skills and fitness—is critical in early childhood. But movement also has much to offer in the cognitive and social/emotional domains. Rae’s most popular presentation explores movement’s valuable role in all aspects of a child’s development and demonstrates just how easy it is to make movement part of every child’s life and education.
- Red Flags and Other Warning Signs(this is an extended workshop; attendance at workshop # 2 is required)
Diane Cofoni, M.S., CCC/SLP, Speech and Language Therapist & Kara Valeich, M.S., CCC/SLP, Speech and Language Therapist
Why is Suzie talking in sentences, while Jenny is still using single words? John repeats words when he talks; should we be concerned? Join us as we look at the development of speech and language skills with an eye on warning signs that may indicate communication difficulties in the following areas: articulation, hearing, fluency, language and voice. The second part of the workshop will focus on activities that facilitate speech and language skills. This is an interactive workshop with lots of handouts.
- Teach Music...Me??? You Can Do It and We Can Show You How
Jodi LaNatra, President and Executive Director, Music Preludes
This workshop guides Early Childhood educators, parents and advocates with limited or no musical backgrounds through an exciting world of activities as they journey toward a more profound experience of music. Children's exposure to rhythms, percussion instruments, music appreciation, creative movement, and multi-cultural songs and activities during the critical years promises to boost their brain power for a lifetime.
- Telling Stories: “One Child at a Time”

A good story can affirm a child and help them know their worth. Workshop participants will be guided in learning how to tell a story without memorizing. Lists of stories that support self-esteem will be provided. (Lots of storytelling modeling too)
- Blah, Blah, Blah…
Tina Foley, MA, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen
Blah, blah, blah, we hear this all the time. However, parent involvement is key to a successful child care program. This workshop will review the ways we communicate with families, both intentionally and unintentionally and investigate ways to make your program “family friendly.”
- One Starfish at a Time, One Classroom at a Time
Ruth Airey Vidal, Director of Communications Skills Institute
As early childhood educators, we have a unique opportunity to create a safe and loving environment in which children can learn, laugh and grow. “Example is not another way to teach, it is the only way to teach.”-Albert Einstein. In this workshop, Ruth presents methods for creating a positive classroom community by teaching our children responsibility, empathy and leadership skills.
- The Fish Philosophy(this is an extended workshop; attendance at workshop # 7 is required)
Nezzie DeFrank, Director, Professional Impact NJ
This presentation will provide participants with an overview of The Fish Philosophy by authors Stephen C. Lundin, John Christiansen, and Harry Paul. The basic components of their philosophy are play, make their day, choose your attitude, and be there. The learning objectives will cover how to bring success into your workplace by: making a commitment, understanding your work values, choosing the right attitude, and nurturing the environment. This workshop will be interactive and participants are expected to share experiences and invest fully in the process.
