Young children are innately creative from the day they are born. This workshop will explore how we can maintain our sense of creativity so that we can encourage it in children for life. We will paint, dance and sing. Bring home something to hang on your refrigerator! Come and have fun and learn how to nurture every “starfish’s” gifts.

Why is Suzie talking in sentences, while Jenny is still using single words? John repeats words when he talks; should we be concerned? Join us as we look at the development of speech and language skills with an eye on warning signs that may indicate communication difficulties in the following areas: articulation, hearing, fluency, language and voice. The second part of the workshop will focus on activities that facilitate speech and language skills. This is an interactive workshop with lots of handouts.
- What Happens Early Matters

This workshop will help caregivers understand the importance of social/emotional development for infants, toddlers, and young children. We will look at the skills a young child needs in order to be ready to learn and develop relationships. Participants will be reminded that how a young child “feels” affects all areas of development. Early experiences matter and form “who” we are as we grow. Brain development and it’s relationship to early care giving will be discussed.

- I Think…Therefore…MI! Multiple Intelligence in the Classroom

How can teacher’s best tap into the inherent motivation each child brings to the classroom? This session will highlight the idea that learning is an active process between the child and his/her environment. Participants will explore the genetic contributions to learning and the theories of Howard Gardner and Mel Levine who highlight the different types of intelligences and processed of learning. Understanding these differences will assist participants in facilitating the learning process for each child in their classroom to feed the natural curiosity and drive to learn each child possesses.
- The School-Home Connection—Working with Families: One Parent at a Time

Working with the parents of young children is a crucial, important and at times, difficult part of working with young children. Often daycare providers and preschool teachers have to work with parent s from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds and parenting styles. This workshop will focus on how to develop a successful collaboration with parent so children can receive the best possible care and education. Communication strategies will be explored as a way of building strong partnerships between school and home.
